Read the guideA safe, step-by-step routine for using a car ozone generator for smoke, pet and musty smells: clean first, run a short timed cycle and ventilate fully.
Read the guideFor a bedroom or living room, look for a listing that states an output of about 3,500 to 10,000 mg/h, a built-in timer, a plug that fits US outlets at 120V, and positive recent reviews. Bigger output is not automatically better: the unit is used in an empty room, and a timer lets you control how long it runs.
No. Ozone irritates the lungs and the throat even at fairly low levels. Run it only in an unoccupied space with people, pets and plants out, then ventilate fully before anyone returns. If you can smell the sharp, clean odor of ozone, the space still has ozone in it.
Output is listed in milligrams per hour (mg/h) or grams per hour (g/h); 1 g/h equals 1,000 mg/h. Room volume and odor strength decide the size you need. Use our calculator on this page for a rough starting point, then follow the manual of the unit you buy.
Many work for simple odor jobs, but advertised output is often the seller's maximum and not an independent measurement. Check the voltage and plug, whether spare ozone plates are sold, and recent buyer photos and reviews before you pay.
Not in every case. California limits ozone emissions from indoor air cleaning devices sold in the state, and other states have their own rules. Check your state regulations and the listing details before you buy, especially for devices marketed as air purifiers.
